Salute to Veterans Part 2!

With some more research and a walk through Farewell Retreat Cemetery there is much more history to be discovered.

For example Matson Peterson was laid to rest here in Republic, he was a Revolutionary War veteran. We were able to find the headstones of William Carney and Philip A Harrison who were both veterans of the War of 1812 (1812-1815).

We also find that there are 2 veterans of the Mexican War (1846-1848) who were laid to rest here in Republic, and  88 veterans of the Civil War, including  Annie E. Hemingway whose headstone is illegible but we were able to locate her in our research and her grave is marked with a veterans flag and marker that says Woman's Relief Corps 1883. This was The Official Women's Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic Organized in 1883. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy and Marines who served in the American Civil War.

We find 9 veterans of the Spanish and American War,  (April and August of 1898). And as of the printing of the Seneca County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions 1987 book, 11 veterans of WWI (1914-1918) and 14 veterans of WWII (1939-1945) and one man who was a veteran of both the Korean War (1950-1953) and Vietnam (1955-1975).

Because our book has not been updated since 1987, there have, with out a doubt been more veterans laid to rest at Farewell Retreat, we salute and honor each and every one, without their service and sacrifice our great United States of America would not be the country we love.
