The Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad reached Republic in 1839 running from Sandusky to Bellevue, Flat Rock, and then Republic continuing on to the Mad River at Dayton. This Engine the "Sandusky" was one of the first steam engines west of the Allegheny Mountains with a steam whistle. At the height of its success in 1849 the railroad transported 77,000 passengers. In 1860 traffic between Republic and Sandusky ended as did Republic's prestige as a grain shipping center and rail depot.
