New Log Cabin Sign

Scipio Republic Area Historical Society has a new sign at our log cabin at the Republic Community Park. The sign is made from redwood that has an interesting local history. The story begins when Freeman and Della (Mason) Neikirk were married in 1899 and moved to a Scipio Township farm about four miles north of Republic around 1940. Our redwood boards were originally part of a silo on the Neikirk farm.

After Della passed away in 1963, the farm was purchased by Donald and Suzanne Hopple. The Hopples had no use for the silo, so they dismantled the silo and saved the redwood to be used again. This year, 2023, the Historical Society was in need of a new sign. Using the redwood that started as a silo many years ago, Don Martin created this beautiful sign and installed it at the Community Park on April 14, 2023. Thank you for giving this redwood new life, Don! We’re excited that the sign will be enjoyed for many years to come.
